Africa Rocks! bonspiel raises $10,000 for 10th year of curling!

We did it!
Thanks to you, the participants of our 10th annual Africa Rocks! curling bonspiel on Nov. 3, we reached our goal of $10,000. We would like to thank all who attended and made it a great event.
We’ve been holding Africa Rocks! since 2008 at the Rideau Curling Club. Each year first time curlers and experienced pros take to the ice for the annual ‘funspiel,’ partaking in three games of curling in support of Farm Radio’s work.
After a cup of Bridgehead coffee on Saturday morning, the newbies participated in a short lesson from our long-time supporter Duncan Bury. Then, 16 teams faced off for the top prize – Mailvoire’s Small Batch white wine courtesy of Malivoire Wine.
This was our most successful year ever. We beat last year’s record by $2,000 and cannot thank you enough for helping us support African broadcasters and farmers.
Africa Rocks! goes corporate
As a new addition to Africa Rocks! this year, we were joined by ten incredible teams from businesses around Ottawa on Friday afternoon for our first ever corporate bonspiel.
Teams raised an incredible $3,885 in addition to the $10,000 raised by our Saturday bonspiel participants, with Goldblatt CAPE (a combined team of Goldblatt Partners LLP and the Canadian Association of Professional Employees) taking top honours for both curling and fundraising. The team raised $400 for Farm Radio International.
Welch LLP; Scrivens Insurance and Investment Solutions; Capital Office Interiors; Independents Rock; RedLeaf Music, LWG Architectural Interiors; Flux Lighting; RBC Westboro and a second team from Goldblatt Partners LLP rounded out the competition.
Special thanks to Anderson Links who pledged $200 towards the cost of icetime, and to Steve Roberts of Barking Monkey Studios who chronicled the event through his camera lens.
We can’t wait to see this event get bigger and better next year!
