Our work in

Burkina Faso

There are nearly 70 languages in use in Burkina Faso, around 60 of which are indigenous. This makes for a highly multilingual radio environment, with many small radio stations serving specific communities. We started working there in 2013, partnering with a range of radio stations — especially faith- and community-based ones — on food security and nutrition projects. We ran some of our first radio cooking shows there, helping listeners learn to prepare orange-fleshed sweet potato — a vitamin A-rich alternative to traditional varieties. Burkina Faso is also the central hub for our work advancing sexual and reproductive health as well as maternal, newborn and child health — important new areas of focus.

By combining radio coverage maps with population density information, we estimate that our partner stations in Burkina Faso have a combined potential audience of more than 8.5 million people.
