CBC Radio’s “Sunday Edition” with Farm Radio’s Doug Ward Audio Now Available

Doug Ward, Farm Radio International’s Chair, with staff at Radio Fana in Mali

As an update to Friday’s post, CBC Radio’s Sunday Edition episode from this week featuring Farm Radio International’s Chair, Doug Ward, is now available online in MP3 format. Click here to listen (Doug’s interview starts about 3/4 of the way through the Podcast):  http://podcast.cbc.ca/mp3/sundayedition_20090702_16420.mp3

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Thirty years ago, riding a bus in Zambia, a CBC journalist had a really good idea. Instead of teaching African farmers about spark plugs and tractors – things they’d never even seen let alone used – why not give them information that might be useful on seeds or compost or oxen.

Originally, George Atkins wrote all of the scripts – on subjects such as how to build a maize crib, how to prevent soil erosion and where to find good feed for cows at the end of a dry season.  Now, most of the material is written by Africans for Africans.

Please take some time to listen.  The interview, conducted by CBC’s Michael Enright covers many interesting topics revolving around Farm Radio’s work from our 30th Anniversary to the humble beginnings of our organization and the African Farm Radio Research Initiative (AFRRI).

A big thanks to CBC Radio and of course Doug Ward for getting our message out to the Canadian public.
