Who
benefits?
Radio broadcasters
Good, dependable information can be hard to come by in rural Africa. Our radio scripts and other resources help hundreds of stations share valuable farming and health information with the communities they serve. We also offer training and support to help them develop their skills and create the best possible programs for their listeners.
Small-scale farmers
It sounds simple, but a high-quality radio program can be the difference between a good harvest and a bad one, health and hunger, and a life of plenty or one plagued by poverty. The radio shows and services that we support help tens of millions of farmers enjoy a better life through their own hard work and determination.
Why support us?
Proudly Canadian
For nearly 40 years
Established in 1979 by celebrated CBC farm radio broadcaster George Atkins, Farm Radio International has been a registered charity in Canada for several decades.
Give with confidence
Trustworthy and transparent
We work hard to make every dollar go as far as possible. In the last fiscal year, 87% of our funds went directly to our core programs, with only 13% spent on administration and fundraising. We are proud to have been rated a top charity by Charity Intelligence Canada, earning its highest rating of five stars.
For more information please download our latest audited financial statements or view our Canada Revenue Agency listing.
A leader
In communication for development
We are the only international non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to using radio as a tool for rural development in Africa.
We have won a number of awards for the innovation and impact of our work, including from the World Summit on the Information Society, the Canadian Council for International Cooperation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Agricultural, Learning, and Impacts Network (ALINe).
Lasting change
Radio gets results
Studies show that up to 40% of those who listen to a radio program supported by Farm Radio make a change as a result.
And that’s just the beginning ... good ideas have a way of spreading.
Plus, the benefits don’t stop at reducing hunger. Those who grow more and better food also experience better nutrition and overall health and are able to pay for expenses such as education and household needs.

Volunteer opportunities
Volunteer radio mentors:
Starting in October 2023, Farm Radio International is offering a 10-week Radio for Development e-course to help broadcasters from about 140 stations across sub-Saharan Africa make engaging, entertaining, and informative radio programs for their audiences.
We are seeking seasoned professionals with a background in radio production and programming to serve as volunteer mentors. Mentors will provide “coaching-at-a-distance” support to participants by reviewing their work and giving them written feedback and advice.
