Connecting with Youth Using Interactive Radio: Starting Important Conversations on Air and Online

Farm Radio International is a communication for development organization that uses a variety of communication techniques to reach youth on the platforms they use every day, whether that’s social media, podcasting platforms, WhatsApp or radio. We run youth listening groups and work with existing structures like youth clubs, schools and health centres to facilitate conversations about topics that matter to youth. Our youth programs have addressed subjects ranging from sexual and reproductive health to youth employment and mental health. Youth listen to the radio, and it influences their attitudes and behaviour — though they may consume content differently than their parents. Besides considering youth’s needs when designing our programming, we involve youth in producing and broadcasting interactive radio shows to ensure that their voices and experiences are heard on air.
