Finding new ways to make radio better
We pioneer innovative digital solutions and develop engaging new radio approaches to make the world’s most popular communication tool more entertaining, effective and interactive than ever before.
Innovative digital solutions
Far from being eclipsed by newer technologies, radio is especially powerful in today’s high-tech world. Devices such as mobile phones have transformed radio from a top-down medium to a two-way communication tool that enables real dialogue and exchange. We continually work to find new ways to combine radio with other technologies to better serve listeners and make their voices heard.

Leonard Kinyamagoha
Farmer, Siha District, Tanzania
“Helen Madege mentioned the phone number on her program Kilimo ni Utafiti [Swahili for Farming is Research] and I ‘flashed’ it. It called me back, at no charge, and told me what weather to expect in this region. When it said to expect heavy rain, I knew to plant my long-term maize.”
Innovative program approaches
The right approach to a radio program can help listeners get the most out of it. This is especially true when it comes overcoming a particular problem or challenge, such as unfamiliarity with a beneficial new crop or increasing women’s involvement in radio programs. That’s why we work to create new radio formats designed to achieve specific results.
The Hangar
Where new ideas take flight
Our digital solutions work first began on the grounds of our office in Arusha, Tanzania, in an old garage converted into an ICT innovation lab
that we call “The Hangar.” This work has since expanded to other country offices, with the common goal being to make radio more useful and interactive by combining it with tools such as computers and mobile phones.
