We have developed a range of approaches to radio programs that get results at scale. They are used in our radio projects to raise awareness, increase knowledge and drive the adoption of behaviours that help millions of people enjoy better livelihoods, nutrition and overall wellbeing each year.

PRC

Participatory Radio Campaign

A PRC is an outcome-oriented radio campaign designed to boost the uptake of a specific farming practice or method over 12-16 weeks. This award-winning approach has been proven to significantly increase knowledge and the uptake of good agriculture, health and development practices.

Radio Marketplace

Radio Marketplace is a weekly radio segment or program that provides market information and explores marketing topics from the perspectives of farmers, vendors, processors, transporters and more. In addition to increasing knowledge, it works to strengthen linkages between farmers and other actors in a given value chain.

Listening Post

The Listening Post is a 6-week series designed to gather and share the unfiltered opinions of rural citizens with policymakers and other development partners. It combines specialized radio broadcasts with our interactivity platform, Uliza, enabling listeners to participate in polls, leave voice recordings and request specific information.

Her Voice on Air

HVOA employs women-only community listening groups and gender training for broadcasters to increase women’s engagement in radio programs. It has been shown to improve women’s access to radio programs and boost their contributions to on-air content. More broadly, it has helped get communities talking about gender-equality issues.

Drama Plus

To get results, radio programs need not only be informative but also entertaining. Drama Plus combines a 13-52-part radio drama series with on-the-air discussions that connect the story to real-life challenges and issues. It is particularly effective at tackling sensitive issues such as gender inequality and mental health.

A QFP is an ongoing weekly radio show that addresses local farming and development issues through specialized content and discussion. It helps to meet the regular information needs of rural citizens and to deepen their relationships with the stations that serve them.

Echo Campaign

An Echo Campaign follows a Participatory Radio Campaign to reinforce key information, deepen listeners’ knowledge and expand behaviour change. It covers the same topic(s) as the original PRC but incorporates the experiences of farmers who have already benefited from the featured practice(s) to encourage more farmers to follow suit.

Community Listening Group

Community Listening Group

CLGs are a feature in many of our projects. They increase access to radio programs while providing stations with eager listeners who provide ongoing content and feedback. Members tune in together, discuss the program and then use a shared mobile phone to record questions and comments and send them to their station.

A PRS explores a specific crop or topic over 3-12 months, deepening knowledge and awareness of good practices. The goal is to support farmers at every step of the way, from planting to harvesting and marketing, so that they have the right information at the right time.
