Are you a developer who likes to mash things up a bit? Attend a hack-a-thon now and again? Love the challenge of finding new ways to apply your skills and make the world a better place? If yes, Farm Radio International is looking for a few good programmers like you! Developers from all over the world… read on!

About Farm Radio International

Farm Radio International (FRI) is a Canadian organization that promotes radio as a tool to meet the communication needs of smallholder farmers across Africa. In partnership with our 460 and counting radio station partners across sub-Saharan Africa, we combine radio with modern ICTs such as mobile phones, MP3 devices and online services. With these tools, FRI offers radio stations and rural development initiatives a way to communicate with smallholder farmers and rural households. Interested? Three positions

Three excellent opportunities have arisen for the right, bright, interested professionals. FRI seeks an experienced Online community developer(WordPress/Buddypress), an SMS & Voice developer and a Android developer interested in an exciting opportunity. Do you want to use your skills over a four to six-month stay in the pulsing heart of East Africa? Can you help us build www.barza.fm – our online community initiative – into a vibrant and active space? Or, can you help us program an Android application that radio broadcasters can use in the studio to stay up to date with news? Maybe you know how to leverage SMS and voice based services to create a killer application that links farmers and their radio stations?

Using Modern ICTs to increase the interactivity of radio

One of Farm Radio International’s core competencies is to be a leader in the world on ways in which modern ICTs such as mobile phones, MP3 devices and online services can be used to enhance the interactivity and engagement of radio. Although we haven’t yet written our own open source code, we are working with (and mashing up) the world’s best voice, mobile and sms platforms including: Telerivet, Verboice, TracFM, Tropo, Twilio, Freedom Fone, Mobenzi and more. You can learn about our research and experiences so far. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] for more info.

Volunteer “on us” and see the region!

These four to six month positions will be based at Farm Radio’s regional office in Arusha, Tanzania (see map: http://bit.ly/fri-arusha). The positions are semi-volunteer – which means we will cover all your expenses, including return airfare to Tanzania, visas, health insurance, internal travel, food and accommodation (but don’t worry – we’ll make you work for it)! You will get lots of opportunities to travel and visit radio stations, broadcasters, farmers, rural communities and technology partners in the region – but why not also plan your own personal vacation while here? Zanzibar is just a hop skip and jump to the coast, Mount Kilimanjaro is a stones throw from our office and the best safaris in the world are in our backyard!
